The first few days
- Leave the dressing on for as long as James advised on the day.
- Wash your hands first, then gently wash the tattoo with lukewarm water and a mild, unscented soap.
- Pat it dry with clean kitchen roll. Don’t rub, and don’t use a shared towel.
- Apply a very thin layer of aftercare balm or unscented moisturiser, two or three times a day. Less is more: it should not look shiny or wet.
While it heals (2 to 4 weeks)
- It may feel tight, itchy or flaky, and colours can look cloudy. This is normal.
- Don’t pick or scratch scabs or flakes. Let them fall off on their own.
- Avoid swimming pools, the sea, baths, saunas and hot tubs.
- Keep it out of the sun and off sunbeds.
- Wear loose, clean clothing over it.
Once it has healed
- Use a high-factor sun cream (SPF 50) on it whenever it’s in the sun. This keeps colours and lines crisp for years.
- Keep the skin moisturised.
When to get help
Some redness and tenderness for a few days is normal. If you notice spreading redness, increasing pain or swelling, pus, a bad smell or a fever, contact your GP or call NHS 111. Then let James know.
